Full information about Cellcept

Basic Information On Cellcept

Cellcept is used to lower the immune system in order to prevent the body from rejecting an organ transplant. The immune system attacks anything foreign and its effectiveness needs to be lowered after a transplant surgery. Mostly used for preventing rejection of renal, liver and cardiac transplants, the Cellcept drug is taken with other steroidal drugs.

Precautions/Side Effects For Cellcept

Cellcept or Mycophenolate Mofetil lowers body immunity, making the body susceptible to infections. You should avoid crowded places in order to prevent catching an infection. Respiratory tract infections can be fatal in an immune compromised individual. Lowered immunity also increases the risk of cancer, though not in a short course of time. You must be careful with objects around as bleeding from cuts can happen easily. Do not take any kind of vaccination when you are under immunosuppressant drugs.

Common side effects of brand or generic Cellcept include mild weakness, nausea, stomach cramps and indigestion sometimes accompanied with gastrointestinal bleeding. Some individuals also experience heightened anxiety and sleep problems. Serious side effects include anemia, difficulty urinating and persistent fever, chills that might indicate an underlying infection. You may also experience occasional loss of coordination, occasional slurring of speech and memory problems. Mycophenolate can cause harm to the fetus. You are also not advised to get pregnant during the course of medication. It is not known if it is passed through breast milk but breast feeding mothers are advised to stop feeding when taking this drug.

Cellcept Dosage

The dosage depends on the type of organ transplanted. For preventing cardiac transplant rejection 1500 mg is prescribed. For prevention of kidney transplant rejection, 1000 mg per day is sufficient for adults and to prevent rejection of liver transplant, 1500 mg of brand or generic Cellcept is required. It can also be prescribed for pediatrics from 3 months to 18 years of age. The recommended dosage is 600 mg given twice but this may be increased depending on the body surface area. Dosage needs to be adjusted for renal transplant patients with severe renal impairment. For such patients, dosage should be restricted to less than 2 g per day. The oral medication is prescribed for two to three weeks after surgery.
