General Information on Atarax
Atarax is indicated for the management of pruritus caused by allergic conditions like atopic dermatoses, contact dermatoses, and chronic urticaria. The generic name of this drug is Hydroxyzine. It is meant for oral administration only and is available in the form of oral tablets and syrup.
Atarax is an antihistamine. Histamine, which is a chemical produced by certain cells in the body, is responsible for some of the symptoms associated with allergic reactions such as itching, running nose, and sneezing. It binds itself to cell receptors, and this, in turn, leads to the production of certain chemical messengers that cause sneezing, itching, increased mucus production, and other symptoms of allergic reactions.
Antihistamine, as the name suggests, work by inhibiting the activity of histamines. They achieve this by binding themselves to histamine cell receptors. As a result, histamine cannot bind with its cell receptors. This in turn stalls the production of itch-causing chemical messengers.
Besides being an effective antihistamine, Hydroxyzine, the active component in Atarax, has good sedative and anticholinergic properties. Atarax is also used to treat tension and anxiety in adults. In addition, the drug is also indicated for controlling nausea and vomitting.
Side effects of Atarax
Due to the sedative properties of Atarax, its use may cause drowsiness. During your treatment, you should avoid potentially hazardous activities unless you are sure about how you react to Hydroxyzine.
Other common side effects of this antihistamine agent include: mild headache, dry mouth, or blurred vision.
Less common but serious side effects of this drug are: confusion, seizures, tremors, or ceaseless or uneasy muscle movements in the jaw, neck, eyes, or tongue.
The use of Atarax is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the preparation. First time users must immediately report the occurrence of an allergic reaction to their healthcare provider. Common symptoms of allergic reactions are: hives, facial flushing, skin rashes, itching, trouble breathing, or difficulty swallowing.
The use of Atarax in pregnant women should only be considered when the expected benefits significantly outweigh any possible risk to the fetus.
The safety of this drug in breastfeeding women has not been established. If you are lactating, consult your doctor before you buy Atarax.
The use of certain drugs along with Atarax may increase the risk of certain side effects. Inform your doctor about all the drugs that you are taking to be on the safe side. This includes all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal drugs.
Dosage of Atarax
