Basic Information On Azilect
Azilect is a drug used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, it may be used as a monotherapy. This drug reduces the activity of monoamine oxidase (MAO) and thus it is referred to as an irreversible inhibitor of MAO. There is a deficiency of signaling neurons in Parkinson’s disease. This drug allows the neurons (in the brain) to be re-absorbed, thus compensating for the reduced quantities of the neurons. Brand or generic Azilect is used as an adjunctive to another drug when the disease progresses from the range of moderate to an advanced stage of Parkinsonism.
Precautions / Side Effects for Azilect
Common side effects of Rasagiline may include drowsiness, faintness, dizziness and sleeplessness. You may also have a headache, dry-mouth, stuffy nose or an upset stomach. You may feel light headed or suffer from pains in the joints. Other side effects of Azilect that may be serious, but are rare in nature are hypersensitivity, itching, irritability or agitation, severe rashes, swelling in the face, lips, tongue or mouth. You may also have hallucinations, convulsions or seizures, alterations in sexual desire/ability, fever, change in heart beat, restlessness, trouble in walking, speaking and thinking etc. You must consult your physician if any of these rare side effects occur after taking the Azilect drug.
Rasagiline may affect your ability to think, so you must take precautions if you are driving regularly. If you have had any liver disease like hepatic insufficiency then you must try and avoid this drug. You must avoid food and beverages that are rich in tyramine. It is possible that patients who are on adjunct therapy with brand or generic Azilect may experience hypotension or elevated dyskinesia (that is, lack of coordination and voluntary body movements). It is advisable to have a skin examination done with your dermatologist regularly, to screen for any growths or tumors.
Azilect Dosage
The recommended dosage of Azilect is 0.5 or 1 mg to be taken daily. Though dietary tyramine restriction is not required with Azilect, certain foods like aged cheeses may contain very high amounts (i.e., greater than 150 mg) of tyramine and can lead to a hypertensive “cheese” reaction if you are taking Azilect and have mild sensitivity to tyramine. The recommended dosage of this medicine for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease is 1 mg to be taken orally once every day. For patients undergoing Adjunctive therapy, the recommended dose is 0.5 mg to be taken orally once every day.
