Basic Information on Natacyn
Natacyn 5% is an ophthalmic solution that is for topical use to treat fungal infection in the eye. It is an antifungal drug used in the treatment of keratitis, conjunctivitis and fungal blepharitis. It is effective against susceptible organisms such as Fusarium solani keratitis. Before administering the drug a diagnostic laboratory test must be performed such as culture and smear of cornea’s scraping, in order to determine the type of infection and its source organism. Brand or generic Natacyn should not be used if there is viral or bacterial infection in the eyes. The drug package is available with a dropper. The tip of the dropper should not be touched as the suspension may get contaminated and cause further infection in the eyes.
Precautions / Side Effects for Natacyn
Side effects of Natacyn include hyperemia, redness, burning, stinging and irritation. Natamycin is generally well tolerated and safe. Thus it does not have many side effects. However, if an event of any adverse reactions you must consult your health care provider or physician. If you are allergic to the drug or any of its contents or have had a history of hypersensitivity due to the drug (or its contents) then avoid the drug or consult your physician before administration of the drug.
While treating keratitis with Natacyn drug if there is no desired response even after 7-10 days then it may be suggested that the microorganism causing the infection is susceptible to the drug. Thus the drug should be continued upon further laboratory investigations and clinical re-evaluation. Natamycin should not be administered in pediatric population as the effectiveness and safety of the drug has not been established in this group of patients.
In the treatment of fungal keratitis the recommended dose of Natacyn 5% drug is 1 drop in the affected eye. The drug should be put into the conjunctival sac of the eyes. The drug is administered in the interval of 1 to 2 hours. After 3 to 4 days, the drug may be administered only 6-8 times a day (1 drop each time). Less frequency of the dosage is required for the treatment of conjunctivitis and fungal blepharitis, 4-6 applications in a day is sufficient.
The dosage should be reduced gradually at an interval of 4-7 days to ensure that the organisms that were replicating are eliminated. The therapy with brand or generic Natacyn is continued till the time fungal keratitis is resolved completely or for a period of 14-21 days time.

What is a "Generic" medication/drug?
Generic drugs are medications that have the comparable medicinal ingredients as the original brand name drug, but which are generally cheaper in price. Nearly 1 in 3 drugs dispensed are "generic". They undergo comparative testing to ensure that they are the same as their "brand" counterparts in:

How are Generic drugs tested to ensure quality and efficacy?
The two most generally accepted methods to prove the safety of a generic version of a drug are to either repeat most of the chemistry, animal and human studies originally done, or to show that the drug performs comparably with the original brand name drug. This second option is called a "comparative bioavailability" study. During this type of study, volunteers are given the original drug, and then separately later the generic drug. The rates at which the drug is delivered to the patient (into their blood stream or otherwise absorbed) are measured to ensure they are the same. Because the same active ingredient is used the major concern is just that it delivers the common chemical(s) at the same rate so that they have the same effect.
