Basic Information On Zymar Eye Drops
Zymar Eye Drops is prescribed to treat bacterial conjunctivitis triggered by aerobic Gram-Positive and aerobic Gram-Negative bacteria of certain strains. Symptoms of conjunctivitis include, severe redness, watery discharge (usually yellow or green) from the eyes, inflammation of the conjunctiva (the area surrounding the eye), itching and irritation. The discharge may collect during sleep, sticking the eyes together. This occurs especially in children. Wiping the eyes with cloth dipped in warm water would unglue the eyes. Zymar drug, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, acts by obstructing and preventing production of a type of protein on which the bacteria survive.
Precautions/ Side Effects For Zymar Eye Drops
Brand or generic Zymar Eye Drops is used topically to treat conjunctivitis caused by some bacteria. Do not introduce the medicine into the inside chambers of the eyes. Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment with gatifloxacin ophthalmic solution. Prolonged use of the medicine may result in organisms which develop drug-resistance. Allow a gap of about five minutes between Zymar and other medicines, if you are using any. Sterilize the contact lenses and consult your doctor before reusing the lenses. Wash the eyes with warm water frequently during the day to relieve the irritation and speed the healing.

On the first and second day of the treatment, repeat the application eight times per day. From the third to the seventh day, apply one drop at a time, four times a day during waking hours. Keep the tip of the applicator clean and free from contamination. Do not touch the tip with hands or wipe it with cloth.

What is a "Generic" medication/drug?
Generic drugs are medications that have the comparable medicinal ingredients as the original brand name drug, but which are generally cheaper in price. Nearly 1 in 3 drugs dispensed are "generic". They undergo comparative testing to ensure that they are the same as their "brand" counterparts in:

How are Generic drugs tested to ensure quality and efficacy?
The two most generally accepted methods to prove the safety of a generic version of a drug are to either repeat most of the chemistry, animal and human studies originally done, or to show that the drug performs comparably with the original brand name drug. This second option is called a "comparative bioavailability" study. During this type of study, volunteers are given the original drug, and then separately later the generic drug. The rates at which the drug is delivered to the patient (into their blood stream or otherwise absorbed) are measured to ensure they are the same. Because the same active ingredient is used the major concern is just that it delivers the common chemical(s) at the same rate so that they have the same effect.
