Flovent Diskus (Fluticasone)and/or alternatives
Flovent Diskus (fluticasone propionate inhalation powder) is used to treat asthma in patients who are at least four years old. It’s a preventative medication that stops symptoms before they start and should be used regularly. Flovent helps patients control their asthma symptoms; although, it is not an appropriate medication to use during an asthma attack. If you are using your emergency inhaler, such as Ventolin HFA, more than twice a week, you may want to speak to your doctor about taking Flovent.

About Flovent Medication
Flovent is available in multiple forms and doses. Check your prescription to make sure you are selecting the right form of medication (as they are not interchangeable) in order to prevent shipping delays. There are two forms of Flovent:
- Flovent Diskus (fluticasone propionate inhalation powder)
- Flovent HFA (fluticasone propionate inhalation Aerosol)
Ask your doctor to demonstrate how to properly use your medication. Discard expired Flovent. Fluticasone has been known to interact with certain medications, vitamins, and supplements. Be sure to tell your doctor about all other drugs you are taking.
How Does Flovent Work?
Asthma is triggered by any number of allergens, such as animal dander, dust, cigarette smoke, extreme changes in temperature, strong smells, etc. When an asthma patient’s lungs come into contact with airborne allergens, their air passages swell and produce mucus, which blocks air flow. The most common symptoms of asthma are bronchospasm, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
Flovent is an inhaled corticosteroid, a substance naturally found in the body to reduce inflammation. When you inhale fluticasone propionate, a synthetic form of corticosteroid, the medicine helps reduce inflammation in your airways, allowing you to breath better. With daily use of your Flovent medication, you’ll start to feel better and experience less intense symptoms. It’s important to continue taking Flovent even if you feel an improvement.
How to Use Flovent Diskus
Your Flovent Diskus features a counter that counts down every time you use your medication. When the counter reaches 5–0, the numbers will turn red. When your doses are getting low, be sure to refill your prescription Online to avoid any disruption in your dose. Discard the diskus when the counter reaches zero.
Flovent is NOT intended for use in emergencies. Flovent is a preventative asthma medication that mitigates symptoms of asthma after repeated and continuous use. If you suffer from a sudden bronchospasm, do not use Flovent. If you do not have an emergency inhaler like Ventolin or its generic alternative, speak to your doctor.
Possible Flovent Side Effects
According to the official Flovent website, Flovent may cause mild side effects. In extremely rare cases, more serious side effects have been known to occur. Watch out for the following adverse reactions:
- Fungal infection in your mouth or throat (thrush). Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using Flovent Diskus to help reduce your chance of getting thrush.
- Weakened immune system and increased chance of getting infections (immunosuppression)
- Reduced adrenal function (adrenal insufficiency).
Adrenal insufficiency is a condition where the adrenal glands do not make enough steroid hormones. This can
happen when you stop taking oral corticosteroid medicines (such as prednisone) and start taking a medicine
containing an inhaled steroid (such as Flovent Diskus). During this transition period, when your body is under
stress such as from fever, trauma (such as a car accident), infection, or surgery, adrenal insufficiency can get
worse and may cause death. Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include:
- Feeling tired
- Lack of energy
- Nausea and vomiting
- Low blood pressure
- Serious allergic reactions.
Call your healthcare provider or get emergency medical care if you get any of the following symptoms of a
serious allergic reaction:
- Swelling of your face, mouth, and tongue
- breathing problems
- Bone thinning or weakness (osteoporosis)
- Slowed growth in children. A child's growth should be checked often.
- Eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts. You should have regular eye exams while using Flovent Diskus.
- Increased wheezing (bronchospasm). Increased wheezing can happen right away after using Flovent Diskus. Always have a rescue inhaler with you to treat sudden wheezing.
- Common side effects of Flovent Diskus include:
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Throat irritation
- Nausea and vomiting

What is a "Generic" medication/drug?
Generic drugs are medications that have the comparable medicinal ingredients as the original brand name drug, but which are generally cheaper in price. Nearly 1 in 3 drugs dispensed are "generic". They undergo comparative testing to ensure that they are the same as their "brand" counterparts in:
- Active Ingredient (e.g. "Pravastatin" is the active ingredient in brand name Pravachol)
- Dosage (e.g. 10 mg of the active ingredient)
- Safety (e.g. same or similar side effects, drug interactions)
- Performance (e.g. 10 mg of a "generic" can be substituted for 10 mg of the "brand" and have the same therapeutic result)
- Intended use (e.g. both "generic" and "brand" would be prescribed for the same conditions)
What this means is that "generic" medications can be used as a substitute of their brand equivalents with comparable therapeutic results. There are a few exceptions (examples are outlined at the end of this page) and as always you should consult your physician before switching from a brand name medications to a generic or vice versa.
What differences are there between generic and brand?
While generics and brand equivalent drugs contain comparable active ingredients, they may be different in the following ways:
- Appearance (e.g. the scoring or markings)
The color, shape and size of the medication come from the fillers that are added to the active ingredients to make the drug. These fillers that are added to the drug have no medical use and do not to change the effectiveness of the final product. A generic drug must contain comparable active ingredients and must be comparable in strength and dosage to the original brand name equivalent. Generic drugs can be more cost effective than purchasing the brand name.
Why do generics cost less than the brand name equivalents?
When a new drug is "invented", the company that discovered it has a patent on it that gives them the exclusive production rights for this medication. Once the patent expires in a country, other companies can bring the product to market under their own name. This patent prevents other companies from copying the drug during that time so they can earn back their Research and Development costs through being the exclusive supplier of the product. After the patent expires however, other companies can develop a "generic" version of the product. These versions generally are offered at much lower prices because the companies do not have the same development costs as the original company who developed the medication.
The main thing to realize here though is that the two products are therapeutically comparable. They may look different, and be called something different, but they are required to be have the same active ingredient.
How are Generic drugs tested to ensure quality and efficacy?
The two most generally accepted methods to prove the safety of a generic version of a drug are to either repeat most of the chemistry, animal and human studies originally done, or to show that the drug performs comparably with the original brand name drug. This second option is called a "comparative bioavailability" study. During this type of study, volunteers are given the original drug, and then separately later the generic drug. The rates at which the drug is delivered to the patient (into their blood stream or otherwise absorbed) are measured to ensure they are the same. Because the same active ingredient is used the major concern is just that it delivers the common chemical(s) at the same rate so that they have the same effect. Please note that the methods that the manufacturers use may vary from country to country.
