Full information about Flovent Inhaler

Flovent Inhaler

Flovent HFA Inhaler (fluticasone propionate inhalation Aerosol) is used to treat asthma in patients who are at least four years old. It’s a preventative medication that stops symptoms before they start and should be used regularly. Flovent helps patients control their asthma to become more bearable. It is not an appropriate medication to use during an asthma attack. If you are using your safety inhaler, such as Ventolin HFA, more than twice a week, you may want to speak to your doctor about taking Flovent.

The proceeding text is for informational purposes only. North Drugstore is an online Canadian and international prescription service that sources medication from dispensaries all over the world. We do not supply any medication without a prescription. Only your doctor or healthcare provider may prescribe Flovent or any other medication. If you have questions about your Flovent inhaler prescription, consult the product information or speak to your doctor.

About Flovent Medication

Flovent is available in multiple forms and doses. Check your prescription to make sure you are selecting the right form of medication (as they are not interchangeable) in order to prevent shipping delays. There are two forms of Flovent:

  • Flovent Diskus (fluticasone propionate inhalation powder)
  • Flovent HFA (fluticasone propionate inhalation Aerosol)

Ask your doctor to demonstrate how to properly use your inhaler. Be sure to clean your inhaler to avoid bacteria buildup and discard expired Flovent. Fluticasone has been known to interact with certain medications and supplements. Tell your doctor about all other drugs you are taking.

How Does Flovent Work?

Asthma is triggered by any number of allergens, such as animal dander, dust, cigarette smoke, extreme changes in temperature, strong smells, etc. When an asthma patient’s lungs come into contact with airborne allergens, their air passages swell and produce mucus, which blocks air flow. The most common symptoms of asthma are bronchospasm, shortness of breath, and wheezing.

Flovent is an inhaled corticosteroid, a substance naturally found in the body to reduce inflammation. When you inhale fluticasone propionate, a synthetic form of corticosteroid, the medicine helps reduce inflammation in your airways, allowing you to breath better. With daily use of your Flovent inhaler, you’ll start to feel better and experience less intense symptoms. It’s important to continue taking Flovent even if you feel an improvement.

How to Use Your Flovent Inhaler

The counter at the bottom of your Flovent inhaler counts down every time you use your Flovent HFA inhaler. When the counter reaches 000, discard your inhaler. When your inhaler doses are getting low, be sure to refill your prescription to avoid any disruption in your dose.

Flovent Inhalers are NOT intended for use in emergencies. Flovent is a preventative asthma medication that mitigates symptoms of asthma after repeated and continuous use. If you suffer from a sudden bronchospasm, do not use Flovent. If you do not have an emergency inhaler like Ventolin or its generic alternative, speak to your doctor.

Possible Flovent Side Effects

According to the Flovent website, Flovent may cause mild side effects. In extremely rare cases, more serious side effects have been known to occur. Watch out for the following adverse reactions:

  • Fungal infections in your mouth or throat (thrush). Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using Flovent to help reduce your chance of getting thrush.
  • Weakened immune system and increased chance of getting infections (immunosuppression). You should avoid exposure to chickenpox and measles, and, if exposed, tell your healthcare provider right away. Worsening of existing tuberculosis, fungal, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, or herpes infection of the eye (ocular herpes simplex) may occur.
  • Reduced adrenal function. This can happen when you stop taking an oral corticosteroid (such as prednisone) and start taking a medicine containing an inhaled corticosteroid (such as Flovent). During this transition period, when your body is under stress, such as from fever, trauma (e.g. from a car accident), infection, or surgery, adrenal insufficiency can get worse and may cause death. Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include:
    • feeling tired
    • lack of energy
    • weakness
    • nausea and vomiting
    • low blood pressure
  • Serious allergic reactions. Call your healthcare provider or get emergency medical care if you get any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:
    • rash
    • hives
    • swelling of your face, throat, and tongue
    • breathing problems
    • bone thinning or weakness (osteoporosis)
    • slowed growth in children. A child's growth should be checked often.
  • Eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts. You should have regular eye exams while using Flovent.
  • Increased wheezing (bronchospasm). Increased wheezing can happen right away after using Flovent. Always have a rescue inhaler with you to treat sudden wheezing.
  • Common side effects of Flovent HFA include:
    • a cold or upper respiratory tract infection
    • throat irritation
    • headache
    • fever
    • diarrhea
    • ear infection

Risks & Safety Information for Flovent HFA Inhaler

Consult the product literature or speak to your doctor about the risks involved when taking Flovent regularly.

Flovent does not relieve sudden breathing problems from asthma. Always have a rescue inhaler with you to treat sudden symptoms. Do not use Flovent HFA if you are allergic to fluticasone propionate or any of the ingredients in the products. Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure; tell them about all the medicines you take and about all of your health conditions. Do not use Flovent more often than prescribed. Do not stop using Flovent, even if you are feeling better, unless your healthcare provider tells you to. If you miss a dose of Flovent, just skip that dose. Take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take two doses at one time.
