Full information about Zirgan

Zirgan Eye Gel

Zirgan (ganciclovir ophthalmic gel) is used to treat eye ulcers, or herpetic keratitis, caused by the herpes simplex virus. Herpetic keratitis can cause serious health problems for your eyes if left untreated, so it’s important to seek medical advice if you suspect you have eye ulcers. Zirgan is prescribed by your eye doctor or health care professional. Zirgan does not cure the herpes virus and should not be used on any other parts of the body where the herpes virus is present.

The proceeding text is for informational purposes only. North Drugstore is an online Canadian and international prescription service that sources medication from dispensaries all over the world. We do not supply any medication without a prescription. Only your doctor or healthcare provider may prescribe Zirgan or any other medication. If you have questions about your Zirgan eye gel prescription, consult the product information or speak to your ophthalmologist.

About Herpetic Keratitus

Herpetic Keratitus is an eye ulcer that affects the functionality of your eye. It is caused by Type-1 Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), which is a virus that many of us are exposed to as young children. Type-2 HSV is a sexually transmitted infection that affects the genitals. Type-1 HSV causes eye infections.

Untreated herpetic keratitis can cause serious damage to the corneas, therefore it’s very important to speak to your eye doctor about any health concerns you have. Untreated eye ulcers can cause corneal scarring and other complications, which may lead to blindness or the need for a corneal transplant. Herpetic keratitis is caused by exposure to infected oral discharge (sneezing, coughing, eating or drinking from the same dish, etc.), so it’s more common in places with cramped living conditions.

The symptoms for herpetic keratitis are:

  • Eye redness
  • Blurry vision
  • Eyelid and corneal soreness
  • Sensitive to light
  • Tearing
  • Discharge

An eye exam with your ophthalmologist will be able to determine if an infection is present. Unfortunately, the herpes virus never completely leaves the body, but many people who are living with HSV rarely, if ever see, the symptoms. An HSV flare-up of symptoms may be caused by several factors, such as stress, menstruation, physical trauma, certain medications, or exposure to sunlight. Your ophthalmologist or health care provider will be able to monitor the virus through routine exams.

About Zirgan Eye Gel

Discard expired eye gel. Keep Zirgan out of reach of children. Do not let others use Zirgan eye drops even if they experience similar symptoms of eye ulcers. It is intended to only target herpes-infected eye cells, and will not work on corneal cells. It’s very important not to let the dropper come into contact with any surface, as this can contaminate the medicine and cause an eye infection. When not in use, be sure that the cap is tightly sealed. Zirgan is only available through prescription. Do not use other eye medication in conjunction with Zirgan eye gel unless specifically indicated by your ophthalmologist or health care provider.

Zirgan is not appropriate for use other than to treat eye ulcers caused by HSV. Conversely, you should not take other herpes medication unless it is specifically prescribed to you. Do not use more or less Zirgan eye gel than the prescribed dosage. If you miss a dose, use your medication as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next dose, skip it. Do not administer a double dose to catch up.

How to Use Zirgan Eye Gel

As indicated by official Zirgan literature, here’s how you administer Zirgan eye gel:

  1. Wash your hands before using eye gel.
  2. Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection while using Zirgan.
  3. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  4. Hold the dropper above the eye with the tip down.
  5. Do not allow the tip of the dropper to touch any surface (including your eye). It may contaminate the gel.
  6. Zirgan is a gel that is administered as a drop. Look up and away from the tube as you squeeze out a drop. For best results, gently squeeze the tube of Zirgan from the bottom of the tube toward the tip of the applicator (as you would a tube of toothpaste).
  7. Once the drop is administered, close your eye.
  8. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of your eye (near your nose) for about one minute to prevent the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
